I don't think it necessarily has anything to do with softness, perspex is lucite, that's not very soft, they make furniture out of it. I'd say its more of an observation of a rise in the use of synthetic materials... Wimpy Bar is an actual restaurant, I think the commentary comes in with the rubber bun...
