Cover art for Darlin lyrics by Avril Lavigne

"Darlin, you're hiding in the closet once again. Start smiling." You are being too hard on yourself ONCE AGAIN. You should try to be happy.

"I know you're trying real hard not to turn got head away." You're trying hard not to run away from these issues and hide your emotions.

"Pretty Darlin, face tomorrow, tomorrow's not yesterday." Look towards the future and don't dwell on the past. Things will get better.

"Pretty please, I know it's a drag, wipe your eyes and put up your head." I hate seeing you like this. I want you to put on a good face for everyone.

"I wish you could be happy instead. There's nothing else I can do, but love you the best that I can." I want you to be happy and I'm trying to encourage you, but all I can do to help you is love you and hope things get better.

"Darlin, I was there once a while ago. I know that it's hard to be stuck with the people that you love when nobody trusts." I'VE BEEN IN YOUR POSITION BEFORE. I know what this is like. It's hard to go through rough spots when your friends and family sometimes don't understand you.

"you're not the only one who's been through. I've been there alone and now so are you." I'VE BEEN THERE BEFORE. I know what it's like to be bullied and misunderstood. I felt alone then, just as you do now.

"I just want you to know it's not your fault." Don't blame yourself or be hard on yourself for someone Else's mistakes. Keep moving forward and don't let people get you down.

This is my interpretation of the song. The CAPS kinda debunk the gay theory. I think the gay thing is something you could take the song as because it may be personal to you, but it is VERY unlikely that's what she wrote it about. It COULD be, but not very likely.

My Interpretation

Maybe when she says "she's been there before" it's cause she's already been rejected, just as the supposedly gay friend's being, but I don't know, she might just be talking about something totally different.
