So this is my first post on SongMeanings... I really like this song, it's one of my favorites off of the album (along with Sex Life.) I'm going to go over parts of the song...
: Some friends, you left me hanging
: in a room with a noose and a chair
I love this part. The pun is awesome, and I'm thinking along the lines of Chiodos, it's probably about his suicide attempt.
: You told me to stay put
: And reminded me why I was there
So I'm curious as to whether he thought about leaving Chiodos previous to them kicking him out, and if so they might have told him to stay with them, and told him he was there because he couldn't do well on his own, he needed the band's success or something like that.
: Cold-blooded and misguided
: You thought that this would be your best
: Then you tried to hide it
: A chance to move ahead
I'm thinking maybe he's saying that they were thinking about how to further the band, and they did that by kicking him out... they then tried to hide the "cold-blooded" nature of it by in interviews saying how they "wished him well", etc.
: Today was the day
: You tried to shut me down
: Today was the day
: You tried to shut me down!
They tried to shut his music up, but he came back strong as ever.
: Be honest
: Did you ever mention my name?
: Did you get sick of the shame?
: Did you lie on your back?
: Be honest
: Did you ever mention my name?
: Did you get sick of the shame?
: Did you lie on your back like a whore?
I'm thinking with the "did you ever mention my name" he might be asking if they were still getting or trying to get popularity with his name. Especially even if it wasn't just with Chiodos. The Chiodos members may have still called themselves "friends of Craig Owens," or other people he knew from maybe high school talk about how they know Craig. And the "whore" might refer to the band dropping out one member for another, I don't know.
: Close-minded with no direction
: A chance to prove who you were
: My friends, you forgot to think
: Of all of the things that you're not
So he's saying that the rest of the members were close-minded and had no direction for the band. By kicking Craig out, they thought they could prove who they individually were. But he says they forgot to think about what they weren't (such as being good at vocals, etc. That was always Craig's thing.)
That's just what I'm thinking. This song is confusing to me though, and there's probably a million ways to interpret it.
