As the title implies, the ninth roman legion was a veteran legion that served across the roman empire between 65 BC and approximately 117 AD. Formed in Hispania (the Iberian Peninsula), they served under Ceasar during the conquest in Gaul, and also in the invasion and occupation of Britian.
The song deals with their mysterious disappearance around 117 AD. The popular belief is that they disbanded in Britain, some believe they were destroyed in the Bar Kochba Revolt in the middle east, but the most fitting theory for the song is that they disbanded or were destoryed by some means in the Netherlands, going on the basis of "Nordic tunes fill the air". While not quite as Nordic as say Sweden or Norway, it certainly fits the song in a better way then Britain given the time period.
The song itself tells the story of the Ninth from their opponents side, with the end result being an ultimate defeat. The guardians of the land, whether supernatural or simply generations of battle hardened warriors, destroy the legion leaving no-one to tell their tale, other then the standing stones who bore witness to their demise.
