I can't help but find the meanings of Poe's songs in transcendentalism. Maybe because that's what I see of Poe's music. And maybe because that is who I am. And maybe that's how we connect.
I'm not going to do a line-by-line because much of it is easy to follow along. But here are the key sections that forge together my interpretation.
You thought you could keep me from loving
You thought you could feed on my soul
But while you were busy destroying my life
What was half in me has become whole
Especially the last line shows how during her suffering she had grown. From her inside, she has become spiritually complete.
While you were looking the other way
While you had your eyes closed
While you were licking your lips
'Cause I was miserable
While you were selling your soul
While you were tearing a hole in me
This part is how he is very much a vampire. Not folklore, but a real one. People who feed on others because they cannot supply enough happiness for their life.
I was taking control
Now I have taken control
Now I have taken control...
So this is how it feels
To breathe in the summer air
The feel the sand between my toes
And love inside my ear
All those things that you taught me to fear
I've got them in my garden now
And you're not welcome here
I believe this is her transcending, becoming a spiritually evolved being. Because this is what I am experiencing now as well. That no matter where I am, I now live my life, by my rules. And all the elements around me remind me of so. The wind carries with it a nurturing breeze. I constantly feel love. And it is often the things you stayed away from, the things that were simply in front of you, that are the breadcrumbs leading to this whole new world.
And now that all of this is a part of her, he is no longer welcome. This is great and analogous of a vampire. How with her new purity he is no longer allowed in. He is thrown out of her life.
Come a little bit closer
Let me look at you
I gave you the benefit
Of the doubt it's true
But keep in mind my darling
Not every saint is a fool
This shows she is a saint. She is one who simply chose the right way of life through her heart. Yet she shows how not every saint is subject to blind love with no hopes of defending themself. It's like she grew into a Goddess before him and too beautiful for him, her power shut him out.
