wow, i'm surprised that i'm the first to say something about this song.
"I will admit I am embarrassed by your grace
And the complete look of boredom upon your face
You want to be a million miles from this place
You want to get on with my untimely disgrace."
the guy, let's call him rico, is with someone who doesn't really hide the fact that they aren't really entertained. it makes him feel terrible, naturally.
"I am alone I am in love with an idea
Sophisticated Neurological appeals
I want to negotiate some kind of a deal
I want to tear it open show you that it's real"
he feels alone, even though he's with that person (in a relationship, i guess). he has an ideal picture of love, but the person he's with doesn't want to share the same thing with him, for whatever reason.
"Oh the things I will believe
Ignore the hundred lovers
You got hidden up your sleeve.
The words come easily
And they sound so lovely
I guess it's just as easy if you lie to me."
rico likes this person, even though he knows they aren't faithful and just says whatever rico wants to hear.
"Everybody they got all kinds of advice
They want to tell you just how you should live your life.
But who exactly am I supposed to believe?
Am I supposed to let you walk away from me?"
everyone is giving rico advice about what he should do about that person he cares for. it's not easy for him to choose who is right, most especially because he doesn't want to let go.
"I know it's coming
I can feel it in my bones
This is information you already know
Even if it's only temporarily
Give the illusion tonight you belong to me"
he knows that it isn't going to work out and they're going to leave sometime or another, but he's kind of in denial. he feels, at least in this part, that ignorance is bliss, and he wants to hang onto what he has even for a little bit.
that's just my take on it. it's kind of funny how much it applies to my life right now.
I don't think he's in a relationship yet with the girl. It sounds like it's still in the courting stage.

"I am alone I am in love with an idea" - I think this is indicative that he is in love with the idea of her -- not necessarily with her.

I also disagree in regards to him having an ideal picture of love. He seems to have a grasp on his mental situation. "Sophisticated Neurological appeals" -- I believe this alludes to his understanding that his brain is making him feel like he's in love -- but...

He believes he's "real" opposed to the other 100 lovers. Wants to show her that he's the real thing. But a deal needs to be negotiated to walk down that path -- people are vulnerable and won't walk down that path unless a mutual understanding (ie deal) is met.
Definitely agree with writtenmoment. I don't think he's in a relationship with this chick yet.

He's kind of bashful and shy about his infatuation with her. He can see, and is probably attracted to, her apathy. At the same time he wants to be the one to obliterate her boredom and prove her wrong - that he's not like the other...

He definitely realizes how silly and 'idealistic' this crush is. He admits that he's probably just in love with the idea of her, and the idea of love, because they don't yet know each other well. He knows its most likely all because of lust and romanticism. But simultaneously, he's saying fuck it, these emotions ARE real. He's trying to convince her to give him a chance. The deal is probably something along the lines of, "just one date."
"Oh the things I will believe

You got hidden up your sleeve.
The words come easily

When you're this blinded by your attraction to someone, nothing else matters - rumors, lies, outright incompatabilities...it all falls away when you just want to know and love them no matter what.
"Everybody they got all kinds of advice
They want to tell you just how you should live your life.
But who exactly am I supposed to believe?
Am I supposed to let you walk away from me?"
His friends and family are picking up on this all-encompassing obessesion. They're trying to break it to him easy that he should let her go, his feelings won't be returned, that he's simply enamored and not thinking logically. They notice the changes in his behavior and take it in a bad way...probably warning him not to put too much of his heart at stake and to distrust his own feelings, because she might just not turn out to be who he expected. Obviously, he doesn't appreciate this feedback.
"I know it's coming
I can feel it in my bones
This is information you already know
Even if it's only temporarily
Give the illusion tonight you belong to me."
'It' could be a number of things. It could be a verbal confession of the 'lies' and the 'hundred lovers' she's already had. Or, it could be a rejection, an 'I just don't feel that way about you," type thing. Of course it could be both. Maybe she's just so disenchanted with life and the heartbreak it's handed her that she doesn't want to have anything serious. In any case, he's begging her to not to verbalize it, because that would mean it existed. If she could please just shut up and pretend for one night. They don't have to kiss or sleep together, just let there be silence and togetherness in general. If only to keep the illusion alive for a moment longer.
That's just my interpretation :) Sorry it's so fuckin long, had to write it just to get it outta my system.
wow. that was odd. i have no idea why i said rico was in a relationship with the person, because when all that happened to me, i wasn't dating the guy. we had this weird thing going where he would tell me nice things and make me seem better in the short-term sense, but then he'd turn around and mess with other girls and things like that (i'm allthisistemporary, by the way).
