I believe this song has to do with losing your virginity (or the lack of).

"We were walking down the block when we thought the bomb went off ...When we looked and we found that it hit some other crowd I was glad it wasn't us, yeah I was proud"

The narrator is explaining that the temptations to engage in sexual relationships are there and embraces the misconception that "everyone is doing it". He ends up being proud that he did not and has not given into that temptation/peer pressure.

"Yeah, I just stay in my home, in my home, in my home"

"I just stay in my home" = he's made the decision to wait.

"Cause I fall and I break just as easy as an egg Yeah, my shell isn't as hard as it seems"

Thinking you're tougher than you are.

"Well, I take a look outside at the pretty girls outside But I can't make myself say "Hi" because I'm scared"

This could be a shot at society's view of the perfect relationship. If someone wanting to enter into a relationship doesn't look like they came out of a storybook, society tends to frown upon them. This is where I get confused with my interpretation...I believe I have the first part right, but in this verse, I view the narrator conveying the message that he's been left out because he's feels like he would never be good enough for a woman he views as attractive and would probably be met with someone laughing in his face if he even tried. With that being said...

"Because I spend all this time all locked up inside It's the only place I know how to bare"

Adding onto what I said above, the narrator knows that if you don't try, you can't fail. He feels like nobody would understand, so he keeps his feelings about love/sex to himself.

"Cause you can go out and meet some girl you can't defeat And you think that she must be the one"

This statement reminds me of the saying, "true love is blind." It's when someone falls head-over-heels in love with another person and are left with thoughts that the other person can do no wrong. This usually leads to people moving too quick in a relationship, losing virginity, having kids, rushing into marriage, etc.

"Until you're walking down the isle and she takes away your smile Boy you wish you hadn't dialed before you wrung"

The narrator is upset that he moved too fast.

I don't know if I got close to the meaning, but this song has to be about sex and love in some way. Why would they call the song "Horny Hippies" if the song wasn't about sex?
