Just laughing at myself and my interpretation of "let's go to bed" as meaning "let's let it go, let's just go to sleep", spoken between two already in a relationship, and having a knockdown dragout and the same problems they've always encountered together. I never even THOUGHT of the sex aspect in this song. :)
The two of us together again
But it's just the same
A stupid game
And what won't they each be the first to say? I'm sorry. I love you. I need you. That kind of thing.
You think you're tired now
But wait until three...
Laughing at the Christmas lights
You remember
From December
You think you're tired of fighting and feeling punchy now? Well, it's gonna get worse, honey. Because we're gonna be up til all night, going over those past relationships and jealousy (another girl, another name) and that whole "but you've changed" thing. The same things we've always fought over. The same stupid game.
Do you realize how you sound as you interpret that song. You sound as though it's NORMAL (OK) for people who supposedly love each other to fight over one partner's "other girls." Are you not OK? It's not normal. It's sick. One of them is sick. The one cheating is sick. He's either very insecure; extremely lonely; and definitely lacking morals and a conscience. He's probably the guy picked last for every team in school; the guy w/o a prom date or who took the fattest, ugliest chick; and now that he has had some success in life he feels...

Oh woe is him...the poor picked on loser who now harms others. My heart breaks for him. The song is excellent, but it's apparently written (and interpreted) by someone who doesn't have a clue about love or maintaining relationships. You know the kind...the ones you don't see once they hit 50 because they lock themselves away in a dark house with blinds pulled as they consume booze...their only friend.
Someone obviously hasn't heard of open relationships ("polyamorous," I believe, is the PC term these days). Mind you, my impression is that this guy is doing something very different and that this particular relationship is probably rather dysfunctional.

Don't assume that the only people who have trouble with relationships are those who were picked on as kids. Frankly society often encourages behaviors that lead to dysfunctional relationships. Smith is being ironic; he's not saying that this is a desirable attitude.

42 steps: I also got the impression that they're both trying to avoid being the one to say...
42 steps: I also got the impression that they're both trying to avoid being the one to say "I love you," in part out of not wanting to be perceived as "needy" and in part because they're afraid the other person might not respond in kind; so each of them is waiting for the other to say it first.
TAOK seems to have problems with reading comprehension, and chooses to use my interpretation as a jumping-off point for their pissy little tirade aimed really at God knows who; otherwise they would see that I clearly stated "past relationships", not anything polyamorous (thanks for the term, picturesofthesun), as my perception of the song's lyrics.

As far as shaking milk, I always just picture milkshakes, conveying a sense of coldness on the part of the singer. :)

How does milk shake, anyway?
