forgotten ties and severed ropes- probably things a person loses due to their addiction/sins/temptations whatever you want to call it.
somehow they overcome, but then relapse hence the description of shooting an arrow through the heart of the light that was so beloved. it could be that the ropes that resembled broken relationships/things lost when you screw up in life are actually what caused him to relapse (hodling tight the ropes, hanging them from poles- means a bow and arrow made from the ropes that were severed)
