This song has always been a huge mystery to me. Not a lot of Biffy Clyro lyrics make complete sense, but this one has always totally baffled me.
In 2018 I was waiting outside a concert venue to see Kendrick Lamar and I look over and see Simon Neil, the singer of Biffy Clyro, standing nearby in the queue and I thought “This is it, this is my chance to ask him.”
So I walk up to him and without any introduction I say to him “Hey, I’m sorry but I have to ask what the fuck the lyrics in Once An Empire mean!” (Scottish people are usually this casual with strangers)
and he turns round to me and laughs, then says “That’s not for now.”
It’s now 6 years later and I still lay awake at night wondering what the lyrics mean.
