The protagonist in the story feels like something is out of place, it is being told by "inaudible voice", it is the furtive monologue he needs to destroy society. The protagonist feels like being part of the world that hates humanity destroying the world. The protagonist may also be humanity itself, having to destroy its self-build society eventually.
I'm pretty sure they mean society with "this masquerade".
It could also be an unspoken subject between people, and people keeping up appearances for it and someone decides he won't be pretentious anymore.
