Burning in the Skies Lyrics

It's not as literal as it seems. Just because there is talk of burning and smoke does not mean it is about a war scenario.

The song is about painfully admitting to oneself that your significant other is not the one, that you two are not meant to be.

"I use the dead wood to make the fire rise The blood of innocence burning in the skies"

The one who realizes the relationship is not right is intentionally trying to destroy the relationship (breaking up) to prevent pain in the future. That person feels bad because it is causing pain for the other (the innocent one).

"I'm swimming in the smoke Of bridges I have burned So don't apologize I'm losing what I don't deserve"

The heartbreaker is feeling the pain of breaking off, too, because of how much the relationship meant to him or her. However, he or she doesn't want the other to feel bad because the heartbreaker knows he doesn't deserve him or her anyway.

"We held our breathe when the clouds began to form But you were lost in the beating of the storm But in the end we were meant to be apart In separate chambers of the human heart"

They both knew it was coming, however it was impossible to stop because "the beating of the storm" was already acknowledged. They simply weren't meant to be.

Sad song. :(

My Interpretation

@adamguy17 Sometime it is that literal, especially in this case where the war interpretation fits in with the rest of the album's themes. This album is a concept album about nuclear war after all. If anything, claiming it's just about a failing relationship is worse when taken in context of everything else.

@adamguy17 I agree with @Nettacki. A lot of songs on ATS have this undertone of warfare and destruction. Sure, you can just interpret this song as being about a personal relationship, but there's no reason as to why you cannot interpret this being related to the general theme of the album.
