i think that the mystery man is god, and the singer is a person questioning that there is a god because of all the evil in the world, and because his question isn't answered he stops caring and just moves away from religion...just my thought
I think you've got the right idea, (I don't know if JB believes in God), but I think he's just singing from a point of view that Christian's go through all the time, rather than turning away from religion completely. JB is saying through this song that he has acknowledged he needs a connection with God but it is so hard to keep this connection going, especially when he's living in a world where people are constantly trying to fill the 'God shaped hole' in their life with drugs, sex and alcohol (amongst 1000's of other things) in their pursuit...
