I think that this song means that he loves someone, but the relationship isn’t working out and he can’t be himself around her for fear of losing her. Their relationship has just gotten to be too much and it isn’t going anywhere (hence the “…every day we’re running in circles”). Also, he wants to see her and have her tell him that everything is going to be alright, but either she can’t or she won’t. He is confused by their crazy relationship, and deep down he knows that he can’t continue loving this person.
“I am still painting flowers for you” means that he is pretending to be someone he’s not for her by covering up his true self, and he’s weary of it (in this sense he is the “white rose,” their love is the “red paint” and the girl he loves is the “Red Queen/Queen of Hearts”. The Queen of Hearts would be more fitting because, with what we can get from the song, she has stolen his heart.) Also, when the song says “the dream isn’t done”, I interpret that to mean that his confusing relationship is like Alice’s Wonderland (a disturbing yet fascinating dreamworld that he feels he has to escape). This isn’t to say that Wonderland is a bad place; the only reason it’s like poison to him is that he is in love with the Red Queen rather than the Mad Hatter ïŠ.
