Yeah you got it mostly right BoxyBrown26. This song is about historical occurrences of the Haley's/Hale-Bopp comet, and how it always seems to bring death when it passes near our planet:

Some theorize that the dinosaurs were killed off by a comet or meteorite. Could have been Hale-Bopp.

At the time of Jesus birth in Bethlehem the gospel of Matthew explains that King Herod had all the newborn baby boys killed because he was afraid of losing his throne to "he that is born King of the Jews. for we have seen his star in the east, and are come to worship him. When Herod the king had heard these things, he was troubled."

The Heaven's Gate cult committed the largest mass suicide in US history when the Hale-Bopp comet passed by Earth in 1997. They believed that they would be carried away to a ship that was waiting for them on the other side of the moon.

This song was written shortly after the cult's mass suicide.

Also, the line is:

Oh mighty Nike she took them away on the wings of victory

Nike(or Athena to the Romans) was the Greek god of victory. Her wing is the logo used on Nike Shoes.
