I think this song is about a girl who holds deep affections for a boy very much, but the boy doesn't feel the same way about her. She tries to do everything to try to please him, to try and get him to feel the same way. But the boy isn't innocent at all. The girl likes him so much that she finds out all the things he likes and tries to please him, hence, "steps to your door". HE knows exactly how she feels for him, and yet, he plays with her, and gives her ideas that they could truly be together. So as he leads her on, she falls more and more in love with him, but when she realises what he was doing all along, she becomes miserable.
