Breakup song. I was watching Nowhere (the Gregg Araki film), and this came on, I was thinking "sounds a bit like Mojave 3", I nearly fell off my seat when i saw it in the credits (along with a myriad of other songs that I picked up (I was literally shouting out "THIS IS SONIC YOUTH, I SWEAR")) :D
The narrator (a male) wants to break off a relationship. he keeps trying to work up the will to do so, reminding himself of it all the time ("I got a number on my wall"). he's been thinking about this long and hard, taking his time before he really knows what's the right thing to do, trying to find more of a reason to break up. of course, he wants to do it causing the least pain, trying to find the easiest way to do it, but he knows that it'll be the hardest thing to do.
hope that makes sense. I might be oversimplifying it, but it's a fairly simple song (lyrically), and I can't see much immediate metaphor in it, so I'm translating it rather literally.
