This song is definitely all about drugs and being in love(addicted) with drugs at one time. For the people that think this is about a girl, it is NOT! He is talking to the drug like it is a girl(probably marijuana, coke, or heroin) and he and his friends are going through a relationship with it. From a young age we as people are told drugs are bad; but when you try them the first time, they can be fun. but after a while you get sick and tired of it. some of your friends give up drugs some don't.
Everybody seems to be having problems with the last paragraph of the song.(smoked out in the van, holding on and on and on.)- it's about before you do something when you are an addict you usually get a fix before you do it. no matter what it is. and the reply from an addict is "hold on" (meaning wait a second) so he can take a hit. friends that are addicts tend to get left behind. this guy got left behind in the van.
