I think the "The shallow drowned lose less than we" means that its better in the long run to stay in "shallow water" than to take the risk "swimming in the same deep water as you" even though it seems like a good idea. In other words, even though it seems like the best thing to do, at the time, is get really involved in a relationship, you will only end up losing everything in the end. Sad really how it means that love isn't the most important thing in the world like most love songs say.

This has to be my all time favorite Cure song when I was in my suicidal thoughts over a boy. I could relate to the song at the time and I interpreted it as a suicide song where two people can't be together here in this life time but know that in another life they will be. Even now, 23 years later after I first heard it, I still get moved and teleported back into my late 20s. Definitely a break up song and broken heart. I guess it also depends where you are in life and how it resonates.
