I'm pretty sure this song is optimistic. It's sincere at least. The parts about "flying to the red" and "one more you're dead" are warnings about lifestyle and not doing drugs I think. So the message is just "follow the day and reach for the sun" which basically means just enjoy the world and life for its beauty and that drugs aren't the answer.
