I think Tom waits really made this song his own. if you compare his version with the doo-wop original (which is also nice) i believe he added an extra dimension. he made it extremly beautiful and sweet but with a haunting and spooky undertone. the deep warm drums and the cold, close to the bone guitarsolo's (Marc Ribot?) makes this song a classic Tom Waits.
The thing I like about this song (in his version) is that you don't know if his love is reciprocated. i always thought the last lines in the chorus were " I wanna tell you how much i love you but i'm drowning in the sea of love". as if his love was to big and brought him down.
