I think something can be said about the actual idea of ghost. Perhaps when he was doing blow he just went through the motions and wasn't all there. It was as if a ghost was living his life and now he sees what he's left with. He's proud of "the people he's met and the places he's been" but he wasn't really there, when did he lose control.
