This song is about the Hobbit. In it Smaug bemoans his deathly defeat at the hands of Bard the Bowman through the line "You shook me all night long".
The bird is obviously one of the thrushes of the Lonely Mountain who could sing but could also "whistle", in a language understood by the Men of Dale. Thrush overheard Bilbo telling the dwarves about the bare patch in Smaug's "diamond-encrusted" underside. By "blowing the whistle", Thrush betrayed Smaug's weakness to the Bard hence enabling his victory. The descending slide guitar which accompanies the word "loooong" emphasises Smaugs fatal fall from the skies back the muddy waters from whence he came.

Bob Plant will be the first to tell you that Robert Johnson's real name was Hopkin Yohanan which means "Famous Star Who Is Favoured By God". It should actually be "Famous Star Who WAS Favoured By God"! It is well know that Yohanan's mysteriously acquired guitar skills were a direct result of him trading his soul to the devil. He said it himself. It's also highly likely that this gift was fed into him through the strange vector of Ike Zinnerman who gleaned his scaley skills supernaturally in the Mississippi graveyards. Yohanan himself articulates the deal with Old Nick in...

Nice theory since Zep likes to use Hobbit themes, but this is not an original song. Muddy Waters created the first part with shook me lyrics by Willie Dixon. The second part with the bird lyrics is from Robert Johnson's "Stones in My Passway".

"if you reverse the B's in bilbo, you get dildo"
WHY does every LZ have to do with freaking LOTRs or the Hobbit? I am sure that Robert Johnson was really into those books when he wrote this song..
