This song is actually one of the only Red songs that I don't believe is about God.
I'll try to take a stab in the dark here;
The singer is singing to a lover, but that lover had to make a choice, to walk alone (maybe for some type of addiction--hence the "You gave it all away" and "And now you've gone astray" parts) or to stay with the singer. The lover had chosen to "walk alone" and the singer is sad at that thought. He says that he needs her with him (maybe because he's also going through some hard times in his life). It also sounds like he's explaining it as a narration;
"Again
Lying in your bed
Nightmares in your head
Facing all that you just threw away
At the edge again
It's coming to an end
You had the chance to
Never walk alone".
This part also sounds like the lover whom had chosen to "walk alone" is having a hard time, has become depressed (to the point that she might be suicidal) and that she was losing him slowly, despite him waiting for her to come back. This could also be vice versa (meaning the roles are switched and it's the guy who choose to walk away instead of the girl).
"He says that he needs her with him (maybe because he's also going through some hard times in his life)" is not the definition of love. There's a huge difference. Regardless, I love the band and this song.
