But you can't hold on to water, It fills you up but never stays, It's only good to wash away.

The water here represents the relationship with the guy she is having. She can't hold on to something that wasn't there. She wants to be with the guy but he doesn't want a relationship. She is 'filled' up with the happiness she feels when she is with him but she knows eventually it will disapear and a couple of months down the line, she will end up getting hurt. She could of saved him 'from drowning' - gave him everything he wanted but he isn't ready for commitment so therefore she is surrounded by the flood, the flood of tears and also this reflects the disaster which she will face. It is a 'natural' disaster because people tend to fall for someone, who doesn't want the same thing as they do. I think possibly she went into this thinking she didn't want a relationship but realised that she actually does because she has fallen for the guy. The bridge reinforces this:

I knew the waves were icy, when I felt them all retreating, Went to take a dive in the deep end, Oh, what was I thinking?

She has carried the relationship on knwoing it will never be anything serious..even though she knew the waves where icy, she followed her heart and not her head. She has now realised that 'you cant hold onto water', she cannot stay any longer because she is hurting herself and knows she has to leave...she loves the guy and he will 'always have a place to call your home' in her heart but even if she doesnt want to she has to save her self from drowning and escape.

It is a really sad song which captures something that unfortunatly everyone goes through in life. You meet someone and agree that you don't want a relationship but after time you realise that you do, but they still don't and you have no other choice than to save yourself from the ocean of heartbreak. Otherwise you will only hurt yourself.

I really like your interpretation and I agree with almost all of it. I just want to add to your comment about the flood.

Maybe it's not a flood of tears, but if you read the line where she compares her significant other to loving her like water and then when you get to the chorus where she wants that special someone to love her like a flood, I believe it suggests she wants that other person to pour out his/her love like a flood so that it can encompass all of her and not just something that passes through...

I completely agree with you. I think the song has many meanings the most significant one is that she is not getting what she wants. It is heartbreaking, most people read over the meaning because of the kudos which appears when Cheryl Cole is mentiond but I completely agree with your interpretation too, it's very clever and now that you have mentioned it I can see it also. Thanks for the comment.
