I don't know why, but I've always seen it as a commentary on the hypocrisy of modern society. Both Roddy and whoever he's singing about attempt to cope by rejecting everything through their own methods, but are in reality both "too gullible" although they try to be completely cynical toward everything. As I see it, it's almost as if being cynical toward one thing ends in being too willing to believe the opposite side. In further 21st Century fashion, he sings "we must be scared of something", which kind of reminds me of reactionary politics as we see today.
