This song is really easy to interpret first off, one must take into consideration that Cartel is a Christian based band. the first verse alone gives witness to this song being about spreading the word of God;

"Smart kids with too much to say"

  • God grants wisdom to those who seek it.

"And we were so, so sure that they were missing out, They're the ones who were missing out"

  • Refering to those who Do Not seek the truth.

"we were elemental, soaked down to bare essentials"

  • The people who are involved in the body of Christ (Authentic Christians) are all elemental, playing small roles. However, each relys on the other, makeing every one of them essential.

"Who knew we'd get so far?"

  • Those who do not seek the The truth, or follow christ would see christians as not getting very far seeing as in how they don't believe there is a God. But little do they know...

The Chorus is my favorite part and is the easiest to interpret!!

"Our days are numbered by nights on too many rooftops"

  • True, many people hold the "You only live onece so have fun" philosophy, However Christians hold the "You only live once, so live Right" philosophy.. afterall "Our days are numbered". you see, Christians know and understand that in the end days, all humanity will be individually judged for the lives they lived while on earth. Jesus said "Everyone who acknowledges me publicly here on earth, I will also acknowledge before my Father in heaven." and he also said "What I tell you in the dark, speak in the daylight. What is whispered in your ear, shout from the rooftops." So take those 2 quotes into consideration when listening to the first part of the chorus; Jesus whats us to speak of his name and his salvation so vastly without shame to everyone as though we are shouting in from the rooftops.

And burning Bright simply means being a chrsitian; in a crowd of people, it sheould be incredibly evident of the ones who are christian based on the things they say and do... kind of like a light shineing in a dark room. Christians are supposed to be bright lights in a dark world so much so that they make impacts on their communities, or in metaphorical terms, "burn this city".
