To me, the song seems to be him lamenting about either a past love that they're no longer apart of, or maybe just any type of relationship (friendship or otherwise). His coping method with him and whoever no longer being as close as they once were is to just forget about it, "live like [he's] real" as in begin to be a regular person again, and then "turn out the lights and be alive" as in forgetting about it and never looking back.
