this song is awesome. my only issue on the live version is how low he whispers. i have to crank up the volume just to hear him.
as for the meaning, well unless i am reading into it wrong, it is about a love he hasn't got over. obviously they are still in communication when he returned. she appears to be his muse for the writing he does. imo she has moved on, and he is reminiscing with her.
i esp like the part where he talks about the band playing the same 3 chords. the humor helps make it lighten up and not make it terribly depressing.
@feartanic I agree with most of that. I don't think he is in love with her. I think he misses her at times and thinks he's in love with her, but at the end of the day realizes that he's just glorifying their love. "I think yeah okay but maybe it's just the song, And I miss you but it might just be the song" Either way this is a great song.

He thinks hes still in love with her, but its those feelings of loneliness that make him just want to be with what he knows, which is her. He can't move on just yet.
