Wow...you are all wrong...I don't usually post but this song, which is the best I've heard in a long time, demands justice. I came here to get other perspectives but yall are lost. The song is about being depressed, about shortcomings, mistakes, and the regret that follows. Some people can't get past their mistakes, while others wake up everyday looking toward tomorrow. The writer lives in the past...but wishes he didn't.
And the 52 cards thing is...the number of cards in a deck. No matter the card, everytime (all 52), he strikes out.
He's not in prison, he's not playing solitare, he wishes he could move on from something, like some people do, but he can't.
You are correct. I was about to type a post similar to yours. Your interpretation is completely spot-on. I came to the same conclusion-except for the deck of cards, I wasn't sure of how to interpret that-and I realized that this song is so very incredible because of how well it captures what it feels like to be trapped in a depressive/self-loathing state of mind. It feels like a windowless box. In a way, it could easily be interpreted as a prison. "Up but mostly down" perfectly describes how life is when you can't move past your past mistakes and...

"Up but mostly down" perfectly describes how life is when you can't move past your past mistakes and forgive yourself. You get these highs and they can last a while, but when you do hit a down time, it feels like a continuation of every other moment of morosity. In reality, up and down is the general course of life, but because the person in this song can't move past the downs, they feel stuck in room that is getting smaller and smaller as the pressure that falls on one when they do not forgive themselves builds. These lyrics are riddled with such an honesty that only comes experiencing that unfortunately dark state of mind. Ken06 you totally nailed the meaning of this song.

When he says he's got 52 cards in a row that he WON'T LET GO;
he won't let go to get a new hand. He's stuck holding onto the 52 cards instead of playing his SH***Y hand and getting a new one.
I relate to this a lot.

Anyways, thanks for your interpretation. I'm having a rough holiday season as I usually do and this song popped into my head today. God bless, take care.

"I came here to get other prospectives but yall are lost" The only thing needing justice here is your attitude... Chill dude.

People can make up whatever meaning they want for a song, but IMO you nailed it.
