I think that this song is the singer's view on how salvation works. He talks about a "fonder reel" pulling him in and at the same time "giving you a hand". I think it's about him making peace with the mystery of the compatibility of God and man's duties in salvation. At least that's what it means to me. They say they're not a Christian band in their myspace blog but they could be doing that in the same vein as Thrice, not wanting to box themselves up with the "Christian" label.
