I heard this song for the first time today and fell in love. I feel like the emotion in his voice conveys a hope that the love he shares with this person will last. However, there's almost a small doubt that it couldn't work out... and that's why i think he closes with, "this could last forever" to emphasize that there was truly something there and it shouldn't be overlooked.
