I can see the religious meaning but I also think it could be about a guy and the girl he's in love with.
Maybe he's in love with her but he's just so afraid that he'll hurt her so he tries to stay away. The girl is confussed becuase she was really good friends with him and now he's pushing her away. But still He keeps getting closer and closer and relaizes he loves her to much to let go.
