I think it's pretty obvious the man she's lamenting/missing isn't an actual man nor a relationship she had. She specifically refers to him as a muse, someone to see in dreams, and someone to whom she never even said hello to, so I don't think this is about a previous relationship. I think she's mourning the loss of a dream/ideal lover when met with a real, flesh and blood person to love.
I agree, but she is really describing how protective of these regions of ourselves we are and how there is a certain sense of safety when we cling to dreams that have no way of becoming reality. It's beautiful and sacred yet is not real and realizing that is painful. This poem is breathtaking! It would seem such content is reserved for teenaged girls who develop silly crushes; unfortunately that is not the case, I am afraid. The older and the more broken, the easier this is to happen, perhaps.
