As philw44 said, I think it's about a past relationship.
He still loves her but knows that they can't be together, but he enjoys the torment ("I want to stay yearning") that he creates for himself when he thinks about her.
I actually hear "All the while the protests will shine the same, but you will never notice" -He keeps on protesting either in his mind or out loud but the message never gets to her.
"I rely on the process, don't mind the frame. They will never take this dream from me, it's alright. I'll make it back" -This tormenting that he inflicts on himself is just part of his natural process of getting over the girl; as depressed as he may seem it has to happen this way for him. He will never be without the thought of her in his mind but his external composure will "make it back" eventually.
