It's about a zombie outbreak, obviously, but the zombie outbreak is a metaphor for Republican propaganda completely ruining Obama's term and erasing the feelings of hope his election initially gave the country. I'm not going to get too deep into it, but just think about all the references to the color red in the song and think about this line:
We were trapped like a candle surrounded by demons that don't want the light
we being those advocating for positive change in this country and the demons being Republicans who selfishly want things to stay the same for the sake of their own emotional comfort and don't want to "see the light" and realize their old ways are outdated and driving the United States deeper into depression.
