Are you kidding me? She isn't conservative. The whole point of the repetition of "We bought some lies, we did" is that the propaganda flowing about at the time is what Barbara Jean was telling her brother. She approved the war, not because she was conservative, but because she "bought some lies." The song's about how the "jerks" up top in gov't positions fooled the people into thinking it's a good idea to barge into a country and police them like we own them.

After that, she's in denial, and in the midst of her realization that she (and the rest of the country) has been used, her brother's killed carrying out the half baked strategies of old rich white guys trying to get richer off the oil in the middle east.

Shit. I'm not even a Democrat, but that was was fricken stupid. And the fact that our brothers and fathers and sons are getting murdered for someone else's profit is sickening. We bought some lies we did, I'll say.
