For some reason (as chiborino said) this song is very unsettling... It's amazing though.
It makes me think of me and my best friend, actually. Someone having something very serious and/or bad happening in their life and they're trying to hide it from someone.
Maybe they're kinda losing their mind/falling into depression. They can't sleep because there is too much in their head. The safe in the dark thing seems to me to just be a metaphor.
