Here are some of my thoughts about the meaning of this song. I think it is about being frustrated due to lack of inspiration/new ideas for your artistic work. Narrow-minded critics shower you with negative comments and you are ready to give up ("In a hail of bullets I just throw a towel").
Then this starts reflecting in your work ("I'm splashing grays where once was glowing white, I hit the pavement in the sunlight"). You expect some sort of revenue but never get it ("Oh, and as the blood and sweat you've invested evaporates, You'll have tried, but you won't make it pay").
The most beautiful part of the song is the ending. Apparently it is about finally obtaining inspiration without giving up and going into mainstream. I think "Silent/transparent" refers to the Muse, "the one who holds the candle to the glow of you".
