My interpretation is like so:

In the first verse, I always thought the Hero had harmed his girlfriend and just tried to murder her. And when he whispers to her "Let's have fun", what's happening is that he's not done with her. He's not just going to dump her body and bleed out, no, they're gonna be in a thrilling car chase with the coppers on their tails.

When Amy sings "Why can't the ending be happy? Why must it always resolve this way?" it makes it seem like the Hero has always been constantly seeking out terrible conclusions to everything. I feel like the Hero is the kind of individual who is so desperately depressed and messed up that he seeks out "unhappy endings" if only so he can add some drama and excitement to his life.

Yea, he's that desperate and messed up. The other option, having "happy endings" never even crosses his mind. However, the chorus makes it seem like he's upset about how things are going. "Where's my unhappy ending gone?" makes me take the last verse quite literally. The last verse mentions that this is a "dream" and I think the Hero has all along just been a regular Joe, either daydreaming, dreaming, or writing a script.

The thought keeps crossing his mind "Life was supposed to end in tears/blood/fire" or "Life was supposed to be a film" makes me believe the Hero turned Writer now, is a very deranged and depressed individual. Like I said before, he can't even conceive of "happy endings" and is constantly penning "unhappy endings" in his mind, and he ACTUALLY wishes his life would be more full of unhappy endings. He's so messed up, he can't perceive happiness. He just wants unhappiness to unhinge the boredom and blah blah blah-ness of his life currently.

Main conclusion: Hero is so depressed and messed up, he wishes he actually had unhappy endings if only to make his life more "interesting."
