This song absolutely makes me think of graduating high school.
The crowds in stands went wild
We were the kings and the queens
And they read off our names
It just totally makes me think of the sensation when your name gets called and you walk across the stage to get your diploma. For that one little moment, you and all of your friends, no matter how rebellious or how studious or how cool or unpopular you were, your little "band of thieves in ripped up jeans go to rule the world" just for that one special moment.
It was the end of a decade
But the start of an age
At least for me, I just graduated in 2010, and those words absolutely 100% described how I felt about everything; the end of a decade, the end of an entire chapter of my life, but at the same time something completely new and unknown and exciting coming up.
The night you danced like you knew our lives
Would never be the same
Makes me think of my grad night- we had our graduation ceremony, and then we all got on a bus and went to an all night party, the last time that our entire class would be together- ever. I think we all knew that the next time we all saw each other all of our lives would be different.
When they point to the pictures
Please tell them my name
Tell them how the crowds went wild
Tell them how I hope they shine
I love this part of the song. To me, at least, this song is about graduating. Overall, I think it's about the sensation of leaving everyone you grew up with, fought dragons with, moved mountains with. But I think at a deeper level it's about that one special person- that highschool sweetheart or whatever. And while you both realize that life is moving on, you're making that promise to each other to always remember the awesome and inspiring times that you had together. You want to immortalize everything that you two accomplished together. It all may be ending right now, but someday your accomplishments will be remembered.
I agree with Orange Duck, graduating high school was my first thought after hearing this song, but the thanks to everyone that helped out on her last album fits better.

One of my favourites from the new album for sure, it is so uplifting like enchanted.

I really like that interpretation. I didn't think of that at all but now that I read that it fits. :)
