but to me this song is about an external war.

That can mean a pathological liar that makes a tangled mess out of all their lies.
Lying only works for so long, and then it grows to internal torment.

Again, a person is trying to reach out and stop the lying, but it's not working to well. They don't WANT to come clean. They may also be a hypochondriac? "every pain you felt can find a cause from somewhere else" that seems pretty odd to me.
"Our coins can pay for the crime but your faults are yours for a lifetime."
I love that line. It could mean you can talk and bribe your way out, but no matter what you're always going to have to live with it.

Personally, being bi-polar, I can really relate to this. lol.
