This song is amazing. I don't understand what exactly he's referring to. But I actually read someone's comment from another site and they interpreted it as him feeling he's been betrayed by God or his belief in some sort of spiritual thing (I'm not sure what it'd be since he's mormon. I'm not aware of their beliefs). Hence the line, "I don't want to buy into your lies, stare up at the sky and sing, I surrender myself for this."
The rest of the lyrics I think tie in well to that concept, but in some points I think he could just be questioning life in general. I'm not sure.
And about the "yelling in the background" during the bridge, I've been wondering what he says as well. I've just sent Cove a tweet so hopefully he can reply and let me know what he's saying. If so, I'll post it up on here.
