I haven't actually looked to see what the song's actual meaning is, so I could be way off here. This is just my own interpretation.
It's obviously a wistful song about losing someone, but some of the lines, in my opinion, imply that someone very dear to them has died, and they want to join them "In between these sheets where I laid you down, I try to find some rest" but they just don't have the courage to follow through with it "I reach out for the switch but why pretend? I can't turn the lights out now." and further it seems to be about his guilt in not going with them. "Cause it's hard to keep those promises I made when I was strong, and now I'm haunted by the ghost of you", almost seeming to say he had promised he'd go after her, but he couldn't go through with it.
I'm not usually known for macabre interpretations, honest! I just couldn't help but see these undertones in the song.
As a man and writer who has gone through losing a woman dear to me a few months ago to cancer... this song definitely resonates with me... so much that I bought it this morning.

The song is definitely about the loss of a woman, and the man is unable to forget or move on. His relationship with her was such that he sees her in everything he sees and feels.. he cannot rest, he cannot turn the lights out on his love for her... as much as he wants to. He loves her too much to...

Its about not being able to let go... to turn that light out on her memory. But her loss hurts him so much... over and over again.

I don't think you're way off. I had no idea what the song was about but your interpretation makes a lot of sense.
