In retrospect, or 10 years later this song is about the teenage sweetheart who was so close yet so far away.. I was that somewhat awkward 15 year old with the NHS specs etc whilst she was the the privileged but very insecure love interest - in many ways and despite the differences we "worked" but ultimately it was never going to be.
In that respect i just passed my days away getting further wrapped up in the hows and whys of something that could never be, hence the line "I've got nothing to do but hang around and get screwed up on you".
Taking it further the line "Screw that, forget about that. I don't wanna know about anything like that" probably sums up the year on the bottle afterwards as i tried to forget what could have, should have but was never going to be.
A rather sad (or not?) but thats my take on things ;-)
"Year on the bottle" should refer to the coincidental encounter in my local the day after she got married... aged about 18 or 19 at the time - either way have spend a life time trying to forget her and not managed yet.
