I don't know,my take on this song was that he was not necessarily talking about a lover but his father. Like:his father did some bad thingsand the guy never forgave him,,they didnt see eachother before the father died.by that time its too late to say goodbye and that hr forgives him.and I think the fire part is not literal but is just depicting a disaterous event.
