I have to agree with everyone else though. It's about war. From the POV of the soldiers, maybe?
Like this line: "I'll live forever if I lose my life tonight" It most likely means that like most people who die heroically in battle or they do something really amazing and influential, their name lives on forever. It's really sad, but terribly true.
Or "Their faces change, only shame remains" means that the war changes them and that they are ashamed of killing so many people even if it is the defense that they were bad people. They took human lives, good or bad.
