I think -but thats only my opinion and it could be, that this is totally wrong- that there is a girl that many guys like or try to get, and he's convinced that he's the only one who really loves her and that the others are all going to let her fall after they had her. She'll spend the nights with them, but in the end, she'll realize he's the one and goes to him ( Baby doll, do you believe they'll catch you when you fall And when morning comes the sun is gonna shine Don't forget your minor keys your half-lit cigarette) So he doesn't really care about where she slept, because in a stupid way he trusts her.
And he knows she doesn't really love him, but thats only because of the fact that she doesn't know he's the best for her (The love you need'll always pass you by) and he'll wait till she wants him, but in this time she cann tell him to go or to stay, he'll do whatever she wants from him, but he won't stop liking her.
And when she says that she's leaving, everyone's lauhing because she tells that without ever really being anywhere where she can leave, he never really had her. And he realizes that he was a fool and everyone around him have always knew that it's nothing serious, it's just some hook up or something..
