I love the cyclical nature of the "middle-aged madonna" verse.
But she'll go walking out that door
On some bright afternoon
To go and paint big cities
From a lonely attic room
To me, that means we like to tell ourselves we're going to do something big, but for whatever reasons, however you interpret it, something is stopping us from achieving that dream, yet we still hold on to those dreams. In a literal sense, it could mean her dream was to move to a big city, to "get out", but again, all she ends up doing is imagining her dream on a pastel.
