To me, it sounds like this song is about someone with schizophrenia. And the 'boss inside' is the voice inside his head. Throughout his life he's been able to deal with the voices (And all these other cowards

His life would have been made up of 'ugly moments' due to his disorder. That's just what I think, anyway.
